Open Letter to Tameside Advertiser
THEATRE ROYAL HYDE
Following on from articles in your paper over the past two weeks concerning the approved planning position for the Theatre Royal I would like to make the following comments.
As project secretary for Theatre Royal Onward I attended the Speakers Panel meeting on the 5th November and the Trust was represented by its Architect Mr David Watkins, of Brock Carmichael, Liverpool.  The first thing to be noted was that whereas on other applications objectors to applications were noted on the paperwork, but when it came to Theatre Royal Onward the only objection shown was the Trust itself.  I know for a fact that various individuals objected but the main objection, apart from the Trust, was from Theatres Trust a statutory body set up to safeguard the destruction of theatres in the Country. Their letter to the Council was dated 13th August in plenty of time before the hearing.
However, the application was approved, subject to quite a number of onerous conditions. It is now up to the Council to ensure that these conditions are adhered to.
With regard to the removal of the stalls floor, this was approved subject to the new one being reversible. Full details of the planning conditions can be found on Tamesides website www.tameside.gov.uk/
Planning applications – planning applications and decisions – application no. 0800892/LBC – Find – Conditions.
The Trust now needs, more than ever, the support of all our members and friends to ensure that every effort is still made to save this wonderful old theatre for future generations and the community at large.  Pat Jackson

The project has now moved up a gear dramatically, as we have apointed both Archietects, lead professionals anda commercial valuer, the fees which amount to several thousand pounds.
As such we are now looking to increase our income and need to generate much larger sums of money in the near future.
This is not a begging bowl for you, but a concentrated effort to ask you for help and suggestions where we might find additional funds. We are already in touch with major funders, Lottery, Architectural Heritage etc; but what we require now is more local people/firms who think they may be able to help us, particularly any person or firm who has connections with Hyde, Tameside or the Theatre Royal.  if you can help please telephoe Mr Bo b Howarth on 0161 335 0220 who is co-ordinating the project.

The Theatre Royal Onward Building Preservation trust is a registered charity (No:1091964) formed to purchase and restore The Theatre Royal, Hyde.

The Story so far ...

In April 2000 a group of Hyde residents achieved success when a local landmark, the Theatre Royal Hyde, was awarded listed building status, following the threat of demolition to make way for a housing development. The group who named themselves "Theatre Royal Onward" succeeded in gaining listed status on their first attempt, and hence saved the building from the bulldozers.
Following this success a public meeting was convened in Feb. 2001, and as a result of this meeting, it was decided that a building preservations trust should be formed. The aim of this trust is to raise funds for the survey, purchase, restoration and eventual running of the theatre for the benefit and enjoyment of the community.

At a further meeting in April 2001 a committee was elected and Trustees appointed. The name "Theatre Royal Onward" was chosen due to "Onward" being prominent in the town logo and motto. In May 2001, Theatre Royal Onward was registered as a company limited by guarantee (Company No: 4223449).
In April of 2002 the Theatre Royal Onward gained registered charity status No: 1091964, and had raised enough funds and secured a grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund to allow Lloyd Evans Prichard of Manchester, whose restoration work has included John Rylands Library, to commence the buildings survey. At the same time a technical survey was arranged by the Theatres Trust.
Since then members have been in touch with potential funders and hope that a presentation to the business community, to show the potential of the theatre, might help overcome the initial hurdle of purchase or lease of the building. So far two businessmen, both with experience of theatre and community needs and supportive of our aims, have offered financial help in this way. It is hoped that more backers will come forward to help either financially with the purchase of the building and a lease back arrangement with TRO and/or the further assistance which will be required with insurance and such other day-to-day expenses.
We are currently conducting a market research survey, to give an indication of the potential for use of the theatre by asking the general public why they think it should remain and what would bring them in through its doors to place bums on seats.

There is still a long way to go until the Theatre Royal, Hyde, is back to its former glory, but with your support it can be achieved. . '
