HELP SAVE THE THEATRE ROYAL HYDE

To all supporters of the Tameside Arts Network -

A few days ago members of the TAN committee plus a few other arts enthusiasts had a meeting with Adam Allen of Tameside to discuss the Draft Tameside Cultural Strategy document. This document deals with the development of Sport, Heritage, and the Arts in Tameside, and a consultation process is currently being conducted lasting until around mid-October. Among the points discussed were the following:

(1) The Arts section was agreed to be completely inadequate and should be rewritten. Coverage of the Visual and Performing Arts (and also the literary arts) is almost non-existent except for many references to public sculpture and brass bands, which are generally categorized as part of Heritage rather than the Arts.
(2) While Sport and Heritage seem to receive substantial attention, the third category has now become Events, Festivals and the Arts, which diminishes the status of the Arts. Events and Festivals could equally well involve Sport or Heritage.
(3) There is very little recognition in the document of what is currently happening in Tameside in terms of music, theatre, writing, painting, etc., and no strategy to encourage participation, and no recognition of the shortage of performing venues and exhibition space.
(4) There is no recognition of the needs of the disabled regarding involvement in the Arts.

If you want to contribute to this discussion, make sure you get  a copy of the document as soon as possible.
And it would be great to see you at the AGM of the Tameside Arts Network, which will be held at 12 noon on Saturday 13th October at the Tameside Hippodrome (in the bar area). This meeting won't last more than an hour (at the most)!
Best wishes
John Miles
